ABSTRACT
Wisdom is naturally considered a good thing, but in many philosophical traditions, as well as in art and literature, it is often also associated with a deep, almost existential sadness. This paper attemps to shed light on this mysterious connection between wisdom and sadness. I will explore three approaches to this connection - a theoretical, a practical, and an aesthetic approach - and will argue that none is adequate on its own, though jointly they do much to illuminate "depression's wisdom".
