Talk by Giacomo Pezzano (University of Turin)
ABSTRACT
Is it too comic an idea to do professional philosophy beyond merely reading and writing books and journal articles? To answer this apparently weird question, my talk proceeds in three steps. First, I revisit the Aristotelian triad of theoria, praxis, and poiesis to argue that philosophical production constitutes a largely unexplored dimension of philosophical activity, which I address by introducing the notion of philosophical artefacts. Second, I stress that standard philosophical artefacts consist of works such as books and journal articles, and I ask whether the “philosophical factory” should, and perhaps must, be expanded into the production of other kinds of artefacts. Third, I discuss a case study of a forthcoming philosophical comic book, presenting its production process, structure, and content, and arguing that the comics medium may offer not merely communicative advantages to philosophical research but genuine epistemic ones as well.
