Meta-metaphysical Aestheticism

Talk by Uriah Kriegel (Rice)

ABSTRACT

Let “metametaphysical realism” be the view that the aim of metaphysics is to discover a distinctive set of truths – metaphysical truths. This paper presents an argument against metametaphysical realism – I call it the “argument from theory-choice” – and considers five possible reactions to it, each embodying a different conception of the aim(s) of metaphysics. I argue that of these five positions, aestheticism is (perhaps surprisingly) the most amenable to reflective acceptance.
